Workshop: Circular Bio-Nutrient Economy

This workshop on The Circular Bio-Nutrient Economy is an innovative experiment in multi-disciplinary engagement to tackle challenging issues such as the recycling of nutrients from human excreta to agriculture. The workshop was led by an artist, Ella Ziegler, to explore how we can advance the conversation about excreta in a society where most bodily functions are not discussed. While the topic was specific to the circular bionutrient economy, the wider issues of sustainability and the need to bring many actors together to arrive at solutions is a common problem that this workshop tackled. This artist-led conversation with a diverse group of participants generated a portfolio of artist-booklets that can soon be downloaded and will be available as hardcopies at The Soil Factory and through workshop participants.

Food quality, nutrition and soil health are intricately linked. Food was prepared by Keith Merkovich who gave an introduction to the linkages of soil management and cooking.

One of the tools that the group developed is a set of booklets. These booklets were presented at The Soil Factory on September 8 2022 (click on the images to download the pdf).

The book launch was accompanied with reading of the poems and stories, singing of the Poop’n Pee song, and sharing opinions and strategies about our society and the need for recycling in the City of Ithaca.
